Consuming large amounts of saturated fats can cause high LDL cholesterol levels. risk factor: An individual's habits, traits or conditions associated with an increased chance of contracting a given disease. statins: Drugs that are often the first choice for lowering high LDL cholesterol. Statins reduce the amount of cholesterol the liver produces so that liver cells can absorb more cholesterol from the bloodstream.
