triglycerides: The extra calories the body converts and stores in fat cells. High triglyceride levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

total cholesterol: The total amount of all cholesterol in the blood. The higher a person's total cholesterol level, the greater the risk for heart disease.

trans fats: Man-made fats that form when vegetable oil hardens. Found in processed foods such as french fries, potato chips, cookies and crackers, trans fats raise LDL cholesterol levels and diminish heart-protecting HDL cholesterol, causing a greater risk of heart disease.

unsaturated fats: High-calorie fats proven to help lower blood cholesterol if used in place of saturated fats. (See "monounsaturated fats" and "polyunsaturated fats.")
